In a divided America, a painted mural in answer to one admirer inspires and displays our common humanity – it proves that America is good. Balance Gym in Washington, D.C. shows us how we can lift others up and keep them moving.
Tessa Sollom Williams, who is a 90-year-old former ballerina, sent a letter to the gym telling them how much she enjoys watching their rooftop workout classes from her 8th floor apartment window. She works at emulating their moves and she watches the classes closely.
The gym loved her letter and put it on their Facebook page: “Friday Feels. It is messages like this that keep us moving. We’re going to look for even more ways to inspire our neighbors next door, so stay tuned for some fun updates!”
Showing the true goodness of Americans, the Balance Gym honored Mrs. Williams and anyone else who was interested in fitness by painting a large outdoor mural with the message “Keep Moving.” It was proudly displayed in large, bold letters on the side of the gym facing her apartment.
Devin Maier has taught fitness classes for a number of months on the rooftop of the gym. He had no clue that Mrs. Williams was watching his classes and admiring the routines. The mural is a large thank you note and an invitation to Mrs. Williams and to anyone else interested in joining the fun and fitness of the gym. That is the embodiment of the American spirit in action.
Despite all of our individual differences, this is a great example of how we can be there for one another. The gym’s message showcases our common humanity and unites us as Americans. In a time of uncertainty during this pandemic, their sign of appreciation to Mrs. Williams and others is a beacon of hope and goodness to all of us.
